Excerpt from:
Hunt Transport, Medicine Hat,
Alberta
By Nertz Tarnasky, Medicine Hat, Alberta
Before founding J. D. Hunt Transport in the
early 1950s, Jim Hunt worked for several trucking companies, one of which was
Security Storage, an Allied Van Lines agent in Winnipeg, MB. In 1951 he moved
west to Medicine Hat, AB, and soon found work there with Robertson Transport in
their moving and storage division, which was primarily on Allied Van Lines
dispatch as well. Subsequently Jim moved on to Soo Freight Lines, purchasing his
own tractor to become an owner-operator pulling for Soo. After a time with Soo,
he moved over to Prairie Pacific Transport, an Edmonton, AB, based general
freight carrier that operated between Alberta and the British Columbia West
Coast.
At some point during this time period Jim
started up his own operation under the name of Eager Truck Lines, but little is
known of that venture. However, it is assumed it was started after he left
Prairie Pacific, as his tenure at Prairie would have given him West Coast
contacts. In any case, it is known that Eager operated between Alberta, BC, and
possibly Saskatchewan. Although it is not known what became of Eager, it appears
to have been in operation for just a short period.
